In Greek mythology, the Harpies or Harpies were initially beings with the appearance of beautiful winged women, whose main task was to enforce the punishment imposed by Zeus on Phineus: using his ability to fly, they continually stole his food before he could take it. This led them to fight the Argonauts.

The Harpies were daughters of Electra and Taumante, and sisters of Iris and Arce. Hesiod describes them in his Theogony as creatures with "lovely hair," which is in keeping with their originally beautiful appearance.

Its defining myth is linked to Phineus, king of Thrace who had the gift of prophecy. Zeus, furious with him for having revealed the secrets of the Olympian gods without consent, punished him by confining him to an island with a feast from which he could not eat anything, since the Harpies always stole food from his hands just before he could take it. This punishment lasted until the arrival of Jason and the Argonauts, who sent after the Harpies the winged heroes Calais and Zetes, the Boréadas. They managed to scare them away, but did not kill them at the request of Iris, who promised that Phineus would not be disturbed again. Grateful for his help, Phineus told the Argonauts how to overcome the Simplégades in order to continue his journey.
